Cravings

Have you ever wondered why you get those crazy food cravings during your period?  During your menstrual cycle, your hormones are out of whack that causes you to crave certain nutrients.  You might be surprised to learn these nutrients go beyond sugar.

Can you guess the 4 nutrients?

Thanks to the folks at &Me, here’s a list of the four nutrients your body craves and some strategies to deal with it.

1.  Magnesium

Increasing your magnesium intake can decrease some menstrual symptoms like cramping, constipation, insomnia, headaches, and anxiety. Try dark chocolate (yum).

2. Sugar & Carbohydrates

During menstruation, women shed a lining of the uterus and cleanse toxins that may have been ignored during the month prior. This requires a lot of energy and increases your hunger.  Target foods with protein and health fats.

3. Salt & Water

Our hormonal reactions are linked to our adrenal glands.  These glands need minerals to function properly.  When we are mineral deficient, we crave salty foods.  Drinking water helps.  Watch your salt intake.

4.Vitamin B and D

Lots of our cravings can also be tied to Vitamin B and D deficiencies.  Try getting beans, nuts, grains and green veggies into your diet.

Were you able to guess all 4?  I personally had no idea magnesium was on the list.  Which one's surprised you?
